Caring for Children with Complex Disorders and their Families

Our clinic is one of a few private medical genetics clinics in the country. This relatively new field involves diagnosis, management and counseling for individuals, and their families, with genetic disorders. Our focus is to enable families to minimize the impact of genetic conditions on their daily life through counseling, as well as reduce the odds of propagating genetic abnormalities in their extended family. Medical genetics is increasingly becoming relevant to many common diseases. Overlaps with other medical specialties are beginning to emerge. If your regular physician (primary care or specialist) feels that there is a possibility of genetic issues impacting your diagnosis, we suggest you have them contact us or provide a referral to us for further investigation.

Examples of conditions that fall within the scope of medical genetics include birth defects and dysmorphology, mental retardation, metabolic and mitochondrial disorders, skeletal dysplasia, connective tissue disorders, cancer genetics, teratogens, and prenatal diagnosis. Hereditary disorders include birth defects, developmental delay, autism, epilepsy, short stature, and many others. Examples of genetic syndromes that are commonly seen in the genetics clinic include chromosomal rearrangements, Down syndrome, DiGeorge syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Marfan syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Neurofibromatosis, Turner syndrome, and Williams syndrome. Dr. Vidya diagnoses genetic disorders based on experience and exposure to extensive research. We may order additional testing, as required. Tests results are interpreted to develop or confirm diagnosis, and care coordinated with other physicians or hospitals. In the event that a diagnosis is in the early stages of medical research, we will be happy to work with appropriate research professionals that might be able to help the patient.

More Details about our Genetics Services
More details about Genetic Services and Referral Forms are available at Georgia Genetics

Any pertinent medical records including copies of imaging studies should be mailed to us before the visit. This will assist us in our evaluations and help make the visit more productive.

A typical genetic visit would take about an hour, as we need to take a detailed family history and come up with a plan for testing and therapies. The clinic will make every attempt to provide an uninterrupted schedule for the doctor to spend the necessary time with the patient and their family. Follow up genetic visits could be somewhat shorter. We appreciate your patience as the clinic works on scheduling your genetic visit to accommodate these criteria.

Families interested in a genetic evaluation are encouraged to contact us with any questions.
